Abstract

The ancient Mayan city of Palenque, in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, has always aroused the interest and fascination of countless explorers, travelers and archeology professionals for its constructive magnificence, the natural wealth of the surrounding environment and because it evokes mysteries of a civilization lost in time. From the first information on its existence by Antonio del Río (1787), the first exploratory explorations of Guillermo Dupaix (1808) to the imaginative illustrations of Frédéric Waldeck (1832), Palenque has amazed both people and strangers who have sought to decipher their archaic secrets (Brunhouse, 2002).
