Abstract

This article studies the construction of Mexican nationalism in the context of Mexico’s international relations with the United States of America. It analyses Mexico’s fraught relations with its powerful neighbor throughout the 19th Century and demonstrates how this conflict was reflected in defensive nationalist policy during Mexico’s Revolutionary period. Defensive nationalism will be understood as the nation-state’s efforts, in front of an external threat, to defend its national sovereignty and employ the principle of non-intervention.
