Abstract

Zoonoses in the Andes have a long history in the poorest populations in the Andes. We offer an anthropological and ethnographic approach (life histories, in-depth interviews and participant observation) in three regions of Peru: Puno, Cusco and Pasco. Cystic Echinococcosis/Hydatidosis (EQ/H) presents a double silence, linked to symbolic, cultural and social aspects, rarely understood. We also find a relationship between animals and humans that goes beyond "instrumental rationality". We will show how this zoonosis generates very serious impacts on families and patients, due to the high emotional, social and intangible costs, such as pain, insecurity, fear and dissatisfaction. This is one of the diseases that has been historically neglected in the field of public health.
