Abstract

Norbert Elias became famous as a sociologist for his famous thesis on "the civilization of customs", which would be at the heart of "The dynamics of the West." However, we had to wait for the second edition, widely revised and enlarged, so that a French translation appears (Elias, 1973, Elias, 1975). Even complementing his study on the court society (Elias, 1985), this thesis still presents some blind spots that, respecting their lines of force, allow for some complementary critiques1.
