Abstract

From a certain point of view, there is no sharp distinction between late capitalism and neoliberalism, and in various ways neoliberalism is simply late capitalism made conscious, carried to its extremes and with more visible effects. The real break is usually located between the kind of capitalism that took place in the United States from the 1940s to the 1970s (there is no term for this, Lash and Urry [1987] call it "organized capitalism") , and what came later (eg, late capitalism or neoliberalism).
